Arcos is pleased to announce that Paul Coss, RN is joining the company as Director of Clinical Support and Sales. Paul has extensive experience in critical care monitoring and decision support technologies, as well as ICU patient care. Paul will lead education efforts for new and current users and will coordinate new product features based on user requests.

Arcos released Spanish language support in beta for Burn Navigator Web today, which enables many more countries to use start-of-the-art clinical decision support tools for managing burn resuscitations.

At Smart Monitoring, a conference preceding the Military Health System Research Symposium, Arcos announced plans to develop a Pediatric Burn Navigator. Citing military publications, Chris Meador, CEO of Arcos, said, "Humanitarian care accounted for one-third of combat support hospital admissions...half of these were children." Arcos plans to include pediatric burn resuscitation decision support to all military Burn Navigators purchased as soon as the pediatric version is available. Arcos announced today that it added Electronic Medical Record (EMR) messaging to the Burn Navigator®. All fluid data and some other resuscitation data can now be automatically transferred to a hospital's EMR. Arcos and FDA held a joint panel to discuss device integration safety and effectiveness issues at Smart Monitoring 2014. "Every [Department of Defense] branch today said that closed loop therapy is the future," said Chris Meador, CEO of Arcos. "Let's talk about specific steps to make that happen."

During the panel Chris asked several questions to FDA subject matter experts Suzanne Schwartz, MD, MBA, Linda Ricci, and David Strauss, MD. The questions covered new safety and effectiveness issues and risks related to connecting a urine output monitor to the Burn Navigator, then subsequently connecting the Burn Navigator to an infusion pump. These integrations will enable increased automation of fluid resuscitation for severe burn patients, an active area of research for U.S. Army and civilian researchers. Smart Monitoring conferences meet annually before the U.S. Military Health System Research Symposium to discuss needed technology for the military en-route care system.

Arcos announced today that it shipped the first Burn Navigator devices for U.S. Army deployed use. "Today's shipment is the culmination of many months of cooperative development with the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research to develop a burn resuscitation decision support device usable in the military En-Route Care System and in hospital facilities," said Chris Meador, CEO of Arcos. "We are now in full rate production and delivering devices."

Arcos has partnered with Government Scientific Source, Inc. (GSS) for distribution to the U.S. military. The Burn Navigator Transport Package has National Stock Number 6515-01-621-3571 and can be ordered on GSS' electronic catalog (eCAT) at: www.govsci.com.

Arcos released the Burn Navigator™ Data Tool today. The Data Tool allows Burn Navigator™ users to transform their patient files into PDF reports with resuscitation charts and graphs and to use the hourly fluid data in Microsoft Excel.

"Burn teams are using the PDF reports for resuscitation quality improvement, training and M&M reviews," said Chris Meador, CEO of Arcos. "Burn caregivers want to use the hourly fluid resuscitation data for research, an important part of ABA verification. The Data Tool lets users quickly put hourly data into an easy-to-use format for review and data analysis." The Burn Navigator Data Tool comes bundled with the Burn Navigator license for hospitals.

The U.S. Army Surgeon General presented the Burn Resuscitation Decision Support System (BRDSS) team with the prestigious Wolf Pack award for development of the Burn Navigator™.

Treating a major burn injury requires complex and continuous care which is why the Army is relying on a ruggedized Panasonic tablet that can withstand the rigors of round-the-clock use.

As the sole Department of Defense center specializing in burn care for combat casualties and civilian emergencies, the Center is known as a leader in innovative, state-of-the-art medical care for burns.

Burn Navigator Improves Clinical Outcomes for Injured Soldiers and Other Patients.

A major burn injury is a devastating and severe form of trauma, requiring complex,comprehensive and continuous care. A critical part of this treatment is the administration of fluids intravenously within the first 24 hours. For a soldier hurt on the battlefield in a remote area, providing this initial care is all the more challenging.

"Fluid management for burn patients requires medical staff to assess urine output and otherfactors on an hourly basis and adjust fluid amounts accordingly, to ensure patients are not being over or under hydrated. The approach most commonly used requires manual titration of fluid that may result in human error, potentially leading to suboptimal outcomes.

Arcos' Burn Navigator obtained Aeromedical Certification for H-60 Blackhawk helicopters from the U.S. Army, based on airworthiness testing performed by the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL).

This certification means the Burn Navigator is approved for patient care use during flight on these aircraft and allows the Burn Navigator to be used in military en-route care, provided that aircrew and medical personnel are familiar with the instructions and guidance in the certification documents.

Helicopter certification requires one of the most rigorous sets of tests, including hard acceleration in multiple directions, lifetime vibration testing and rigorous electromagnetic compatibility testing.

The annual Smart Monitoring meeting features many new technologies for critical care. This year, the FDA keynoted the regulatory clearance process for critical care decision support devices featuring the Burn Navigator as a case study.

Suzanne Schwartz, MD, MBA, lead reviewer of the 510(k) submission: "On a personal note, as a surgeon trained in burn trauma management and having been a clinical researcher in the field for many years, I'd be hard pressed to identify for myself a greater professional reward to date, than seeing this technology come to fruition and made commercially available to our injured population. And for that, I have all of you on the panel to thank as colleagues who were instrumental in championing this effort."

Kevin Chung, MD, Medical Director of Burn ICU at USAISR, provided the background of why the Burn Navigator was developed originally. Maria Serio-Melvin, RN, MS, described the Human Factors testing process required to ensure the device was straight-forward, safe, and easy to use.

The U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) Burn Center at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston implemented the Burn Navigator or Burn Resuscitation Decision Support System (BRDSS)-Mobile, approved by the Food and Drug Administration, as part of the Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU) resuscitation regimen.

According to USAISR Research Task Area Program Manager for Comprehensive Intensive Care Research Jose Salinas, Ph.D, who helped develop the BRDSS algorithm which generates recommendations of fluid intake for burn patients, the Burn Navigator is designed to assist in avoiding problems related to over- or under-resuscitating by medical care providers who do not routinely care for burn patients

After receiving clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its medical device, Houston-based Arcos Inc. is launching into discussions with providers and plans to ramp up manufacturing.

The device is aimed at treating severely burned patients. After a person is burned, fluid intake is critical, Arcos CEO Chris Meador said. However, too much or too little fluid can lead to major complications.

HOUSTON, June 28, 2011 -- Arcos, Inc. announced today that it entered into a $750k cooperative agreement contract with the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity (USAMRAA) to develop the Burn Resuscitation Decision Support System (BRDSS). The BRDSS is a patented decision support tool to aid fluid resuscitation of serious burn victims. The underlying technology was developed by the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) Combat Critical Care Engineering (C3E) group and has been in clinical use at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for a few years.

The Burn Fluid Resuscitation Decision Support System, or BRDSS, is a software application out of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research. It's designed for medical staff at field hospitals who don't regularly provide care for burn victims. According to the Army: "It utilizes an algorithm to generate recommendations for IV fluid rates to improve fluid balance during the initial 48 hours after the burn and aims to avoid complications associated with inadequate or excessive resuscitation strategies."
